Android Security Updates vs. Version Upgrades: Why Your Phone Eventually Stops Getting Them

Your phone got an update last night, but you have no idea if it actually mattered. That confusion is by design. Android phones receive two completely different kinds of updates, and the gap between them explains why a three-year-old phone can feel abandoned while still technically getting “updates.” Knowing the difference helps you decide when a phone is genuinely past its prime versus when it’s fine to keep using.

Two updates that get called the same thing

A version upgrade moves your phone from one major release of Android to the next, for example from Android 13 to Android 14. These are the big ones. They change how the interface looks, add new settings, rework permissions, and sometimes shuffle where things live in the menus. They land roughly once a year, and not every phone gets every one.

A security update is much smaller and much more frequent. It patches holes that attackers could use, fixes bugs, and closes vulnerabilities in the underlying system. These don’t add features. You usually won’t notice anything different after installing one, which is exactly why people ignore them. Google publishes a monthly Android Security Bulletin, and manufacturers fold those patches into the updates they push out.

The key thing: these two run on separate tracks. A phone can keep getting security patches long after it has received its final version upgrade. So your phone might be stuck on an older Android version forever while still quietly getting protected every month or two. That’s a perfectly reasonable state to be in.

Why the security patch matters more day to day

If you only care about one of these, care about security updates. A version upgrade is mostly cosmetic and convenience-driven. A security update is what keeps a known flaw from being used against you. Web browsers, messaging apps, and anything that touches the internet all sit on top of system components that get patched this way.

You can check where your phone stands. On most Android phones, open Settings, search for “security update” or look under System or Security, and you’ll find an “Android security update” date. If that date is recent, you’re in good shape. If it’s a year or two old and never moves, the phone has effectively stopped getting patched, even if it still runs fine.

Why support eventually stops

Every phone has an expiration date for software support, and the manufacturer sets it. When you buy a phone, the company commits to a certain number of years of version upgrades and a certain number of years of security patches. Those two windows are often different lengths, with security support usually lasting longer.

Support ends for practical reasons, not because anyone is being lazy. Older hardware can’t always run newer software well. Keeping years of different phone models patched is expensive and never-ending. And the chip inside your phone matters too, because the company that makes the processor also has to keep supplying updates for it, and they stop after a few years. Once that foundation goes unsupported, the phone maker can’t keep patching either.

This is the single most overlooked spec when people shop for a phone. Two phones at the same price can have wildly different support timelines. Some makers now promise many years of both version and security updates, while budget phones might give you only a couple of years. If you keep phones a long time, that promise is worth more than a slightly better camera.

What to do when your phone falls off the list

Reaching the end of support doesn’t mean your phone bricks itself. It keeps working. But the risk grows slowly over time, because new vulnerabilities get discovered and yours stops getting fixed. Here’s how I’d think about it:

  • Keep your apps updated. Even when the system stops getting patches, the Play Store keeps updating individual apps. Your browser and security-sensitive apps get their own fixes through Google Play system updates and regular app updates, which buys you real protection.
  • Be more careful about what you install. An unsupported phone is a worse place to sideload random apps or tap sketchy links. Stick to the Play Store and well-known sources.
  • Don’t use it as your main banking or work device indefinitely. If the phone is years past its last security patch, move sensitive logins to a supported device. This is the one place I’d stop being relaxed about it.
  • Plan the replacement, don’t panic-buy. You usually have time. A phone that lost support last month is not an emergency, but a phone three years past support is on borrowed time.

Your phone will lose access to new versions before it loses security patches, and it’ll lose security patches eventually too, on a date the manufacturer chose before you ever bought it.
