Summary

  • This Mario-themed key hanger is a creative, interactive project, perfect for gamers.
  • 3D print your own version using freely available STL files on Makerworld.
  • The project requires support material and patience, but yields a unique, customizable end product.

You know, I haven’t seen many 3D printable key hangers. It seems like a really obvious thing to 3D print, and yet, I guess the idea never crossed my mind. Key hangars don’t need to be complex; you can easily adjust the plan to fit the kind of screw you want to use, and best of all, you can get really creative with how it’ll look.

Well, there’s no better way to teach me that lesson than this amazing Mario-themed key hanger. While the idea itself is pretty solid, the designer went the extra mile, which makes this project more than just a handful of 3D printed hooks lined up in a row.

This cool Mario-themed key hangar uses a really cool locking mechanism

In a post on the 3D printing subreddit, user Substracted took to the stage to talk about their new Bullet Bill keychains. These things look a lot cooler than I can describe them in text, so check them out in the video below:

Pretty sweet, right? I’m a huge fan of the swivel design; it locks the keys in place and stops them from slipping out.

The best part is, if you want to make your own, you totally can. The creator was kind enough to upload the STL files on Makerworld, so you can get this printed out and installed on your own wall really easily. Here’s how it’s done:

  • In the 3mf file there is a version of the holder with and without screw holes.
  • The screw hole version is designed to fit #2 wood screws (should fit most wall anchors as well), and the other version can use double-sided mounting tape.
  • Simply print one holder, and three keychains
  • There are two plates for keychains: single color, or multicolor bullet bills

    • Unfortunately the bullet bill version requires alot of filament changes, but in my opinion it’s worth it
  • The holders require supports, i recommend using a ‘Support/raft interface’ for the cleanest results

Substracted notes that if your print encounters stringing, you can easily melt them off with a heat gun or a blowtorch. And if you notice the key hangers feel a little stiff, the creator notes that it should get better the more you use it, so keep at it.

If this has gotten you in a printing mood, there are plenty of projects you can create that are based around gaming. If you want something simple, we covered these awesome gaming accessories you can 3D print, which include everything from headphone stands to custom keycaps. And if you’re a little more ambitious, be sure to take a look at this 3D-printed Fallout gatling laser replica, which looks like it’s straight out of the game.
